Objectives: This study examined the use of 24-hour time chart as a visual aide in qualitative in-depth interviewing on health-related behaviors and lifestyles.
Methods: To explore time contexts of health behaviors, a dataset of in-depth interview with time-chart drawing of 17 middle-aged men in Gyeonggi-do were analyzed. The results were compared with 3 qualitative cases (14 older adults, and 21 working and 17 job-seeking young adults living alone in housing instability in Seoul) that had been constructed with the same methods of data collection and analysis.
Results: Incorporating time-chart drawing facilitated the interview by providing a visual guide for the interview and enhancing participant engagement. Moreover, the time-chart method enabled identifying unique behavioral patterns in associations with time use such as exercising in the evening, inactive parts and hours of day - physically or socially, ways of using early morning hours, what eating entails from a time perspective, media watching before bed, and night snacking with alcohol while watching media
Conclusion: While the time-chart method needs further refinement in terms of operation, analysis, and capturing sporadic behaviors, it holds the potential for a contextual, triangulated approach to describe health behaviors in daily living.
